Beyond Gender: Rethinking Identity, Roles, and What It Means to Be Human

Every March, we celebrate Women’s Month. And almost inevitably, the question arises: “Bakit parang walang Men’s Month?” At first glance, it seems like a call for equality. But a deeper look reveals something more important: Women’s Month exists not to elevate one gender above another, but to remind us of a time when women had to struggle for opportunities that men were freely given. History carries stories that quietly expose this reality. One of them is about Dr. Fe Del Mundo, a Filipina pediatrician who became the first woman admitted to Harvard Medical School. She was accepted under the assumption that she was male. Imagine having to be mistaken for someone else just to be allowed to learn. It was not her capability that was questioned, it was her identity, a woman. In countries like Afghanistan, since 2022, many young women have been restricted from enrolling in colleges and universities. Imagine having the desire to learn, the ability to grow, the potential to contribute, and...

Am I the Same Person I Was 5 Years Ago? Why or Why Not?

If you think about yourself five years ago, what do you see? Maybe you see a younger version of yourself with different interests, different worries, maybe even a different personality. You might remember the things you used to care about, the people you spent time with, or the goals you thought were most important. So, are you still that same person? The simple answer is: yes… and no. You are the same person in some ways. You still carry your memories. You still have parts of your personality that haven’t changed. But at the same time, you are also different. Life changes us—sometimes slowly, sometimes suddenly. Think about the pandemic five years ago. Many of us stayed at home, used online classes, and had limited interaction with others. That experience alone changed how we think, how we socialize, and even how we handle stre...

Is Happiness a Choice, a Result, or an Illusion?

I have often found myself returning to the question of happiness—not only as a philosophical inquiry, but as a lived experience. It emerges in quiet moments, when I pause after a long day of teaching, and in meaningful ones, when I witness the growth of my students. Yet despite its familiarity, happiness remains difficult to define. Is it something I choose? Something I earn? Or is it simply an illusion shaped by how I perceive life? As a teacher of Philosophy and Theosophy, I do not encounter this question in abstraction. I see it reflected in my students—their struggles, their aspirations, their silent battles. Some enter the classroom with enthusiasm, while others carry burdens they rarely speak about. In those moments, I am compelled to ask: Can happiness truly be a choice for everyone? Can it be guaranteed by success? Or is there something deeper that we must understand? There are times when I believe that happiness is, in part, a choice . I often remind my students—and mysel...
