Guided Observing Silence for High School Students

As part of Classroom management, This simple Guided Observing Silence will help the teachers to set the tone in the classroom. This guide is designed for, but not limited to, Junior and Senior High School students. This is a jump start to "scanning" which leads to basic meditation process. This technique is particularly used as a springboard for a more relaxed and peaceful classroom.

The person who may lead should have understanding of the nature of energies. Thoughts, emotions and even physical sensations are energies which have tremendous effect on a child, and this can reflect on their behavior.

The facilitator should stand at the front center of the room, use a relaxed low tone of voice, should speak gradually with long pauses and ensure that all of the students follow the directions before starting. When the facilitator feels everybody is on their right fit, then "Observing Silence" may start, this may take 5 to 10 minutes:

THE FACILITATOR:
"Let us sit on the chair comfortably.
Let us set aside any possible distractions.
Let us straighten our back and let our hands rest on our lap.
Then, let our feet touch the floor and as we let our shoulders dropped naturally,
we gradually close our eyes.
We come to a state of doing nothing.
We rest our body, emotions and minds.
And as we enter the door of peacefulness.
We consciously breath.
We draw our attention to our breathing.
Be aware of our inhalation and exhalation.
We inhale through our nostrils and exhale through our mouth.
Inhale... Exhale... ( 5 X )
Let us be aware of our surroundings. notice the sounds and vibrations around us.
Notice the sound of the electric fan, vehicles on the road, students outside, and the chirping of birds.
Inhale... Exhale... ( 5 X )
Let us now be aware of our physical body.
Kindly focus our attention to each part of our body.
If we feel any strange sensations, we do not need to react on it.
Just be aware. Just be aware.
Let us Inhale... Exhale... ( 2 X )
Be aware of the top of our head...
Be aware of our face.... our eyes, nose, lips, chin, ears, and cheeks.
Be aware of our neck...
Be aware of our shoulders...
Be aware of our back area...
Be aware of our chest area...
Be aware of our belly area...
Be aware of our hips...
Be aware of our legs...
Be aware of our knees...
Be aware of our feet.
Inhale... Exhale... ( 3 X )
If we feel any strange sensations or any feeling of discomfort, like vibrations, numbness, or any tickling or hurting sensations, then just concentrate on that area and be aware of the sensations. Remember not to react but just maintain peacefulness and awareness. You may notice that through time, it will fade.
Inhale... Exhale... ( 3 X )
Let us now be aware of our emotions.
We may focus our attention to our heart.
Let us be aware of each beating and as we consciously breath,
feel our emotions, let it flow naturally, and do not try to be attached on it.
Just observe.
Inhale... Exhale... ( 5 X )
Let us be Aware of our thoughts.
As we observe our thoughts, try not to entertain or select any thoughts in our minds.
We just watch over them.
We become conscious of the thoughts, imaginations, fantasies or memories as they come and go.
We may just focus our attention on the middle of our forehead just at the center of our eyebrows.
Let us Inhale... Exhale... ( 5 X )
I will be silent for a minute and we continue our conscious breathing.
Remember to be observant of any sensations in our body. Let us be serene and grateful of every breath in and breath out.

Peace. peace. peace.
(After a minute.)
As this Observing silence ends, we may want to bring back our attention to our surroundings.
We become aware of the sounds and vibrations around us.
Inhale... Exhale... ( 3 X )

I thank you all for staying with me in this silence.
Let us now gently open our eyes. "

After the process, the facilitator may ask the students either randomly, or each one of them to rate their stress level: Mention to rate their stress level from 1 to 10, 1 as the most relaxed and 10 as the most stressed. You may take note of their answers and congratulate those who achieved 1 or 2, and talk with the student having high stress level when the class ends.
