Just a few hours ago, I met the group of volunteers who established MAD (Making A Difference) organization, who made a 4 hour life changing seminar on the value of volunteerism and their sharing of their journey as they try to make a difference to help the younger generation find hope, be able to dream and realize their potential to help others.
I was very moved and inspired by how they communicate their mind set and understanding about helping others unconditionally. Sitting with the students who are participants in the seminar while listening to MAD members, gave me some point of reflections.
I realized how does a simple story of volunteerism rooted from a pure intention of lessening the suffering of others could really make a difference.
We all want to make a difference. In this very short period of our lifetime, most if not all of the people will say that they want to experience that their lives matter to others. Of course, we might be thinking of earning a living or materializing our personal dreams as the metrics to determine if our life really matter but there will always be a point when we will have to think of helping others and make a difference to them positively. Why do we have this kind of thinking of helping?, of volunteering? Why is there a small portion in our brain that kept on thinking... "Hey, You need to help others, dear". We find it really strange and often times we never listen to this subtle whisper.
From listening to MAD, I realized that helping others could be one of the needs of a human being. This is perhaps the main purpose why we are living in this world. We could only feel our purpose when we start to live not for ourselves but for others. Quite paradoxical, isn't? But based on experience and from the stories of people who have gone through volunteerism and unconditional helping, it really is.
We all want to be happy, fulfilled, and satisfied in our lives. We dream of good life. But we need to re calibrate our mindset about attaining these. We will never find happiness in just fulfilling our dreams, but helping others fulfill theirs. If we dream, dream about the next generation, think about making a difference, making service and be a volunteer.
Thank you MAD, for relighting our fire for volunteerism.
