Did you know Walt Disney, Albert Einstein, William Roentgen, Thomas Edison, and Steve Jobs? You may notice that they were great souls who have paved our history into what it is now, but there was one thing they have in common--they were all exposed to hardships and have committed many mistakes in their lives.
In reality, many of our conceptions about mistakes are not true. Many people fear mistakes as being a trap or a prison which they disgust with and did not want to experience. Others thought of mistakes as humiliation or degradation of one's worth. Whatever it is that we thought about mistakes, it was proven that mistakes are actually stepping stones to achieve success. Many people are having a hard time realizing it but let me tell you some of the benefits of committing mistakes:
1) Mistakes mean you did something
A person who did not do something did not accomplish anything. When you commit mistakes, it is a good indicator that you are doing "something". If you failed to fix your computer, at least you are able to learn how to disassemble and assemble it. You might lose the final goal but you might gain something better along the process. Thomas Edison told us that he failed a thousand times before inventing the light bulb. Such an example leads us to realize that if he stopped doing something, then he might not arrive at what we treat today as one of the best stepping stone inventions.
2) Mistakes draw out Adventure
When we fail on something, it delivers us to a world of loss. It seems like we have to figure out the best thing to do to become successful the next time. This leaves us the spice of adventure. If you have read the story of "Huckleberry Finn" or the "Tom Sawyer", you will figure out what I mean. These stories make us believe that experiencing mistakes and struggles are just part of an interesting book of one's life. An adventure is a state of unusual and exciting experience or activity and to some adventurous people, mistakes could be a whole damn extreme ride!
3) Mistakes make us Humble and Wiser
We normally feel proud when we always have luck. Well, nothing is wrong with being always right and correct but there may be some virtues that could not be tapped when we do not experience mistakes. For instance, a person may not realize to respect other's opinions, if he/she believes that his/her opinion often is the correct one. It is detrimental to experience being infallible, and you might consider the tendency to commit mistakes as a blessing. Having experienced mistakes makes a person so humble that he tends to recognize the point of others before concluding or deciding.
4) Mistakes create better instruction and can teach us a new way
If you failed on one course of action, it is natural to think of better ways to do something. This taps our creative faculty on solving problems, and exercising such faculty will lead us to open up new windows of opportunities. Such in case, when we realize that giving chocolates was not effective to appease someone because we have done something wrong to him/her, we might consider giving apology letters as a remedy. Mistakes really make us creative problem solvers!
5) Mistakes lead us to realize our higher purpose
If we failed to become something which we really dreamed of when we were young, does it end our life? Of course not. Practically speaking, we tend to accept it at different points in time. Mistakes make us realize that we cannot always be what we want to be, but we can always have the ability to discover what we really are. You may not be a basketball player, but as we tried, we can become a sprinter. If you did not fail of being a basketball player, you may not realize that you were running so fast to run across the court and so you discovered your potentials of being a better sprinter than a basketball player. Many big people became famous because they tend to choose better passions, such passions did not just pop out overnight, they have discovered these passions because they have learned to rise up from challenges and mistakes.
6) Mistakes mean you are a human
Our entire entities have been designed to become vulnerable to mistakes. This is the number one rule I learned in my Biology class. All of us can commit errors as our bodies and even our psyche or mind are not perfect yet. So do not be burdened by the thought that it is a damn thing to experience mistakes. Mistakes are actually making us realize how vulnerable we are. Mistakes make us understand that flaws are just part of our evolutionary growth and will leave us lessons to be careful the next time.
Of course, as much as possible, we are trying to do the right thing. But in such cases when mistakes manifest, we have to learn how to easily accept them, be realistic, and do not think so much to the point that we blame others, ourselves, and even the world. mistakes are a normal thing, it does not belong to peculiarities by which we should be amazed of. It is part of life. It is normal to be saddened about the mistakes and felt down at times due to consequences. But time shall heal everything and we have to learn to stand up once again and continue life.
